Musicals have meant something special to me my whole life. As a kid, I loved Disney movie musicals like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (still do). When I joined choir in middle school, I was introduced to so many more, including one of my favorites, Newsies. I took this and ran with it, especially once I entered college, and could often be found on my drives to campus blasting Wicked and Phantom of the Opera. I can identify with lyrics, characters, and story lines, and their presentation through musical theater or cinema really makes them all come to life. It’s truly genius.
Musicals have carried me through different parts of my life. The Lion King was there for me after college in my struggles with depression and the recession. Hamilton has been there for me through loss and sadness. These two have also motivated and encouraged me in unique ways.
But today, in this season of my life, I have found myself identifying with a musical that has served to heal me, encourage me, lift me up, and kick me in the butt! That musical? The Greatest Showman.
Me and The Greatest Showman
I can identify with so many of these lyrics. I can cherry pick them and apply them to my life, but they’re also powerful in the context of the movie’s story. Phineas’ leading through the bright lights back to his family. Carlisle’s leading from living a lie to living out his true self and finding love. Anne and Letty’s journeys from shame to pride in who they are. It’s full of powerful stories and strong characters, and it’s only amplified by absolutely magical musical numbers.
From now on…
From now on, I know it will be a struggle, but it’s also going to be an uphill battle, and that means so much. I know that I have the power to create the life I want, and really, that it’s already here. I can set my sights on the stars and I can get there. They can say it all sounds crazy, they can say I’ve lost my mind, I don’t care if they call me crazy, run away to a world that I design.
But a fresh start for me isn’t a new place. It’s still here, even in 2021 in the middle of a pandemic in a hurting world. It’s just a new mindset and outlook. And that’s something that I can have.
Sharing My Writing with You
I have been too shy about sharing about my books. I’ve been ashamed of them. I haven’t really put them or myself out there, at least not in a long time.
I’m ready to take a step into the light. Today, here’s a start.
The first link is to my books on Amazon, all of which are in paperback and Kindle. The second link is to my Patreon, where you can become a patron and read my short stories as well as receive goodies such as writing prompts, writing activities, and journal pages.
